I usually pick up one random player who happens to be looking for group to do mission when I am re-doing a mission to get bonus/masters, usually for missions that I know I can get the bonus/master with 3 heros and 3 henchs. why waste a space, ey.
PS: they don't necessary have to be new, just need to happens to be there when I am there. will usually get the mission + the bonus. 99% chance even if that player is a killroy.

Do you give free items or free runs?
No, if they're begging freebies, they'll get nowhere in GW.
Help them in missions?
If i'm helping a friend on a mission, i may take along a few randoms.
Teach them about game mechanics?
Sometimes, depends how they ask me.
Give them tips on what to do next?
Briefly, yes.
Help them find the information they are looking for?
I just say "Guildwiki".
Tour them through the UI and basic controls?
Nope.
Tell them the philosophy behind a skill, a build or a profession?
Occasionally.

I sometimes when board go to ascalon and see the pleading for something
see what lvl they are and sus them out first then
decide to help them on a short quest or mission ect.
I Never give gold away but if I have something thats merch food I give it to them.
Many ask for more so I then ignore them but others are very greatfull
and that evens it out for me.
I do get tired of answering the same question specially at Events
so thats the time for local chat to go off.
I do give free items to my friends if they need something I have.
Complicated questions ect I say check Wiki from the ingame help
and also tell them about Guru.

Last night I sold one a Fiery bowstring and a +29 bow grip for a total of 600gp. I also gave him the link to Guildwiki. I didn't link him to Guildwarsguru though because I didn't want him to lose his good attitude about the game. Read a few threads and tell me it's not true.....

Do you give free items or free runs?Nope. Anything good can be sold, and even newbies won't take 'poor' golds usually.
Help them in missions? My assassin never gets groups, my ritualist never gets groups, and even my ranger can have trouble getting non-gimmick groups. So... no.
Teach them about game mechanics? Depends how they ask.
Give them tips on what to do next? Sometimes.
Help them find the information they are looking for? Depends on the info. I'll usually just tell them. At risk of flamebait, guru and wiki is full of asshole gimmick builds and strategies that suffer badly after an update.
Tour them through the UI and basic controls?Something as basic as that should be covered by themselves, by reading the manual.
Tell them the philosophy behind a skill, a build or a profession?
I usually tell them to in no real order:
1. Avoid cookiecutter builds at all costs. Ie, stay away from wikibuilds. It's amazing how little you usually suffer from an update (I'm looking at you SS/Reckless Haste combo and exploitable pet corpses just to name two examples) when you don't do them.
2. Bollocks to what people expect, do your own builds and style and don't let people bully you into doing cookiecutters.
3. Skill: Avoid Healing Breeze. Vig. Spirit is better.
4. Skill: Avoid Heal Party. Too much energy for not enough healing. Besides, if your entire team's getting blasted, they're idiots that may learn a thing or two after getting killed. And if they don't, not your problem.
5. Monks can do good damage as smiters.
6. Eles can do good things with earth and water magic.
7. Hammers in pve do work, and can work well.
8. There is no such thing as a bad class. Just bad players.

I've helped people out with money for storage in Shing, even bought a few their first set of armor. Most actually try to pay me back, but I don't worry about it.
I give away any beginner greens I get, or even any good weapon that might help someone out along the way. I've even traded a set of green daggers for a green staff simply because my guildie wanted it and he didn't have the money. Hell, I wasn't using the daggers what was the point in keeping them?
I help people through missions. I've 'powered' people through quests. If I'm there (and not busy) and someone needs a hand or has a question, I have no issue lending a hand. Hell, I've even gotten into (pointless) arguements in defense of someone else that I don't even know more times than I care to admit.
I share dye and materials with my guildies. I bought my ally her 15k canthan monk armor, the dye to make it white, and scrounged up a turtle mini for her simply because she wanted them and I was feeling generous. (It was also her b-day lol).
I guess I'm just strange.

Though still a bit of a Noob myself I don't believe in helping many Noobs. They bought the game then they can learn to play it.

Well, to some people low gold is still better than no gold. I've seen numerous people selling beginner greens to new players. Or selling their services, for example.

I will, but if it gets too tedious I'll say "Use the help panel in the menu" as a last resort.

I won't tour them, just answer any questions.

Do you give free items or free runs?
Very rarely do I give away free items. If they need a map piece, or a couple crafting materials or something like that, I have been known to do that. Days past I gave away a lot more to help people out, not expecting anything in return, but I cant afford that anymore due to Heroes, as well as the community has changed to the point where you often might not get so much as a thank you. Friends and guildies? Sure. Of course.
Free runs I'll sometimes do if someone really needs to get somewhere. I used to run a lot and loved that activity as a game mechanic/challenge. It was also a source of income. Nowadays, neither so much. I still do it for fun by myself sometimes though and, if I am in the mood, I will take someone along if in All chat they seem like a decent person.
Help them in missions?
Yeah, sometimes, as I miss the older PUG days.
Teach them about game mechanics?
Not really. Most of the time you cant even get someone in a PUG to ping their build and, if they do, they even more rarely heed any advice or take any suggestions in a positive way. If I am asked directly in a PM when I am monking in a PUG, as happens when I go join something randomly to be helpful, then I help much more. Wouldnt say I teach, but certainly answer questions and give advice.
Give them tips on what to do next?
Sure, if they ask. Cant go assuming its not someone's 15th time through some given campaign.
Help them find the information they are looking for?
Sure, as I usually have All chat open. If someone asks something and doesnt get a reply AND they arent spamming typos or something childish etc, I'll offer the answer. Even look it up for them on Wiki to be helpful if I am so inclined.
Tour them through the UI and basic controls?
No. This I would only do for a friend in person. Only thing I could suggest in PM form is to go into Option and explore.
Tell them the philosophy behind a skill, a build or a profession?
Not really. Maybe only generally. I dont wish to assume I know precisely how they would wish to play. Prefer rather to offer specific advice, if asked.

Heh. Yeah, I suppose this applies to me as well. I simply pretend not to notice requests/questions that cant even be bothered to be phrased somewhat intelligently/politely, since we actually see more and more of it lately.

i explain that energy attack based warriors are bad, and using mending + blessed aura is a good way of becoming non-reliant of energy on warriors !

Do you give free items or free runs?
No. You can get decent items just by doing the game and I'm against runs, especially for newbies. Doing a campaign makes you learn your profession.
Help them in missions?
When I'm doing a mission with them, sure.
Teach them about game mechanics?
Yup, I tell them basics (like "daggers with a necro may look cool, but you are going to die too easily" or "no energy management on an Ele is bad"), and help them with their build if they have a good idea of what they want to do.
Give them tips on what to do next?
Depends.
Help them find the information they are looking for?
Depends too. If they ask nicely, I will give them the information or guild wiki.
Tour them through the UI and basic controls?
Well... It has been useful to tell them they have a "t" letter on their keyboard more than once.
Tell them the philosophy behind a skill, a build or a profession?
If it's one of my favorite professions (like Necro), sure. Otherwise, no.

I occasionally give any good items I find to people that are in my eyes decent enough to have them, and sometimes when Im running a friend il take as many as possible for free.
If Im bored and only if they can speak proper english, cant be bothered to put up with the "y r u doin tht" language.

Well when I used to play this is what I did:
1. Gave them tips and builds on farming
2. Gave them legitimate price checks on stuff
3. Told them about guildwiki
4. Told them about gwguru
5. Answered their questions on various subjects
6. Gave free help on quests and runs depending on where they had to go
